Was I to racially sensative about a co-worker who was making a joke?

A co-worker ask me if I knew how to keep an african-american from hanging around in your back yard. I said I didn't know. He said you just cut the rope and they will stop hanging. I immediately went to a supervisor and reported him and he was fired. I feel bad he lost his job, but I felt he crossed the line with his joke. Do you think I did the right thing?

That guy said something horrid, and you should have told him so instead of telling the boss right away. If he would have kept on saying things like that then it should be reported. If it was only once, I would have simply just have said, "Hey dude...that's not even close to funny."

I think you went too far with it. I think you should have simply told this dude that his so-called "joke" was an offensive racist slur, and that you do not want any more of this. Having thusly warned him, next time it would be fair to go to the supervisor.
