People say he cost £20m, but they're wrong. The total value of the transfer was actually £16.5m. There will of course be sceptics out there who claim that's still too much for England's No.1 right-back. But when you take into consideration the fact that Portsmouth owed Liverpool about £8m before the deal went through, the value of the transfer is actually about £8m - £9m, since Portsmouth would be simply incapable of paying back any of Liverpool's £8m any time in the forseeable future.
So in effect, Liverpool have gained the money Portsmouth owed them without any hassle, and gained one of Europe's finest wing backs for a very reasonable fee.
And for any United fans itching to say something along the lines of "Yeah, but he's a defender and can't defend!", I'll point you in the direction of Dimitar Berbatov - an attacker who can't attack and cost you double that of Johnson.
All other jibes at Johnson are welcome. I have a whole bunch of counter arguments I'm more than happy to use
Glen Johnson - PFA Right-Back of the year 2008-09. Sagna - not.
Pretty conclusive I'd say. And Johnson is without a doubt one of Europe's finest wing backs. Chelsea offering £20m for him last summer and Capello branding him "world class" tells its own story.
Francois Dérain: Saying "Liverpool aren't doing well because of Johnson" is like saying Hitler killed people because of his moustache. Johnson has in fact been one of few star performers for Liverpool this season when fit. Perhaps had he not been injured so much he WOULD have prevented Liverpool from being in the position they're in now.
Chig: Well of course not because he's been injured half the season. But let's see if Sagna gets it instead. Somehow I think not.
