Was anyone else able to buy their iPhone without activating it in the store?

I am out of town and went to a local Apple store in Oklahoma (I was surprised as shit when I found out there was an Apple store in Oklahoma) and the servers were down so they had 2 lines, 1 for new customers and 1 for current customers. Well for the current customers they just asked to see your iPhone, scanned new phone, and you paid. You signed no new contract, and didn't ask for your wireless number . They said it will all be on itunes when I plug it in

Sell the phone on Ebay, make profit and then go back and buy another one.

I was allowed to walk out of the store with a sealed 16GB white iPhone because the servers had crashed. While they are going for SERIOUS coin on eBay, I'm far too lazy to sell it off, wait around for a new one, create a new line on my account to get the $299 pricing again, then cancel that line and pay the $175 fee, and swap my SIM.

Too much work, whereas selling my unlocked 8GB iPhone 2G took no effort at all!
