Was a Winding Noise, Now Squeals?

History- About a month and a half ago my 1998 Prism finally started to make a "wind-up" noise when it was turned on and hit idle, sounding something like the noise you get from one of those pull-back toy cars. Two weeks after, the winding noise became a constant sound, more predominant during acceleration. It then progressed into a noise similar to a faint lawn edger which was indifferent to when the car was shifted in forward or reverse and did not seem to go away after warming up, but would only happen half the time, as if something had a 50/50 chance of making the noise.
It eventually would whir constantly, a bit more fiercely when I accelerated than when idle.

Now- Today I started it and it is now making intermittent and uneven squeals that range from not worrisome to sounding like something's working so hard it's about to go out. I started and stopped it four times and it is constant. It too seems indifferent to whether I am accelerating, coasting or slowing, but it certainly makes a more horrible noise when I'm feeding it fuel..

All fluids in my car and properly maintained and checked and spark plugs are kept fresh. Also, before this problem my car did about 30mi/gal but only got about 23mi/gal my last fill. A huge drop..
It has been around 50k miles since it's gotten any shop attention.

Anyone know what this might be so I can give my tanking auto a well-deserved fix? I truly appreciate any knowledge you may have on this problem.
