WARNING for Fido users

Oh boy...here we go. A lot of you are going to be disappointed!

The Fido Blackberry Connect plans are also offered on Rogers for the same prices. This is nothing new.....BUT...

They are meant for non-Blackberries (Nokia E62, etc) to get push email. Yes, you can register a normal Blackberry as well, BUT you must be aware of the following:

Blackberry Connect ONLY compresses email data. Nothing else! If you ever use your web browser or instant messaging or any other data application you will VERY QUICKLY use up those megabytes! A regular Berry plan with 1 MB will give you a LOT more data usage than 3 MB on a Blackberry Connect plan. Regular Berry plans compress EVERYTHING. If you use a Berry on Fido or Rogers CONNECT versions of the plans....WATCH OUT! There is a reason they include more MB's!

I am using an unlocked HTC TyTN with Blackberry email through Fido's plan. That's what those plans are for! Emails only.

If you mainly use your Berry strictly for emailing, then you'll be okay. Otherwise, you better realize that 3MB for $25 is not nearly as good as the real Berry plans, simply due to the way data is not compressed. You can use 80% more data browsing/messaging than if you were on the proper plans on Rogers.

If you don't plan on browsing or anything else much, don't worry. Fido will be fine for you.

Cheers,

JP

So Fido is now supporting both BlackBerry and BlackBerry Connect data plans? Is that correct?

Thanks for your Help.

Thanks for that info Fi-doh, I just happened to be looking for this type of information.

I'm planning on getting an unlocked 8300 and I have a voice plan with Fido.

Was hoping to stick to one SIM card, but I guess this wouldn't be a good idea if I plan on using the web.

Can anyone tell me their experiences with the reliability of Fido's BB service data compression aside?

Well, I have a question then, but more on BB plans vs. BB Connect, rather than regarding Fido.

Presently, I am using an 8800 on BIS, that is, I administer the settings on https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=rogers which I would imagine most of you on BIS BB data plans do too, right?

Well, when I had my Nokia E62, I also used the exact same site to administer it. In fact, when I switched from my Nokia E62 to my BB 8800, I just deleted my old device and set up and new one (PIN and IMEI) on the same page.

So was I on Blackberry Connect, or wasn't I? I mean, I realize I could have been and not realized it; in that it's not visible to the user... that is, the data compression being talked about happens behind the scenes, etc. by differentiating between the devices themselves. I didn't change plans when I switched over from one device to another (okay, I have SINCE changed plans but I hadn't at the time of the device switchover).

Just curious.

Hi JP,

I'm looking to get an HTC Tytn and hook it up to BB connect on Fido as well. Was it hard to implement? How does it work? I will only use it for email msging, and not web-surfing. Did it take you a long time to setup?

Any info/feedback on setup would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Josh
