The only times I've ever hit 103 have been with the genuine flu. Not a
stomach flu, not a head flu, not a 'some flu going around'. The real
one. It's only happened three or four times in my sixty four years, and
that's a virus. I've been fortunate enough to have escaped serious
bacterial infections so far, but I have hit 103 without them.
I saw an obituary for some late twenties athletic kid last week that
died of the flu. I think Blinky did too.

the low grade infection that the doctor often describes as "some kind of
virus" or "the kid's got a virus" or whatever. She doesn't seem to
grasp that some of the worst diseases around, the ones that kill most of
the people who catch them and for which there is no effective treatment,
are viral.
