Warning about e50 and WirelessExperts

Just to let those of you who are thinking about buying the e50 from WirelessExperts (also known as Cellz4Less, I think) on ebay what you are really getting. The e50 version they are selling (or at least the one they sent me) is the version with the Asian characters above the keys, has NO light sensor to control the brightness, and the pound key does not work as a phone silencing function as with most other versions of the e50.

Anyway, just thought I'd give you all a heads up.

I just got mine from him but those things never occured to me, then again if I never knew I missed them I never missed them at all.

Hehe, true Vampgirl. I'm not complaining actually, I thought I got a great deal. He was selling them for considerably less than others...

I suppose I wasn't aware at first how many versions there actually are of the e50.

ugh, i was just about to order from them...... so can anyone give the name of a retailer that sells an e50 WITH a light sensor, and one where the pound key DOES work as advertised? (the asian characters arent that big of a problem for me)

(besides the nokia store of course^^^)

thanks!

I purchased my e50 from cellz4less on 12/4/06, and received it 2 days ago. They were supposed to ship on Monday, but it didn't go out until Friday, which they informed me was because there was something wrong with a batch of phones they got.

The e50 I received has no asian characters (although I find that kinda nifty), and the pound key works as you described. I don't know about the light sensor, what's a good way to test that?

I wrote a good consumer review here on HoFo about my experience with them (which was good), but after learning more about my E50 I found out they're selling grey market handsets. Meaning, mine has a product code for India (White), yet has the Malaysian firmware installed - a different code. I verified this with a guy on Nokia forums.

$0.02 USD.

The thing is, Nokia product support in the U.S. on out of U.S. handsets sucks anyway... they won't honor a Euro warranty through Nokia U.S. for example (found that out on my 6630). So if the deal is cheap, get it through Wireless Imports, and then change the product code (which I didn't know you could do until yesterday, lol, thanks rivvah), and then flash it with a firmware that enables all those things (since the hardware is the same, I'm pretty sure).

Okay, I'm getting REALLY crappy reception on this puppy. I get intemittent crackling, and reduced signal compared to my 3120 and 3100. Shouldn't a phone this new have better signal strength and call quality?

Is there any creedence to the idea that e50's with different manufacture regions may be of vastly differing quality?

The phone is fine, for me in London it, carries a signal as good as any other I have had. I am now in New York for xmas an from time to time, guess what- weak signal. It aint the phone.

Signal strength in phones is more a function of your network than the phone. I have never had a problem with signal strength on ANY phone in Europe, lets put it that way. So we need to quit this myth and take the issue up with N. American network operators.

I agree with the original poster. I ordered a phone (Nokia 6270) from Cellz4less almost 15 days ago and it still hasn't shipped. When I finally got this creep on the phone he gave me some story about getting in a bad batch of "locked" phones as well.

I've all but given up on this one and opened a claim against him on Paypal. I ordered an E50 from Samstores.com last Thursday and they shipped it direct from their HK warehouse. UPS called me (automated call) today to let me know my next day air package is set for delivery tomorrow morning. Now that's service!
