War of the Worlds - review

Because in the original time the martians were just better than us and that's why the slaughtered us but we could still detroy them with the cannons etc. So you can appreciate that their bio tech might not be up to it.

But the the new film they have shielRAB and all the rest so why the bloody 'ell would they not know about germs.

I did wonder though, when the EMP killed all the phones, cars etc - how come there was that one guy with a working camcorder (who got heat-rayed)?!!

I seem to remember seeing a miraculously working camera phone as well as a camcorder. I do know Hitachi had some kind of sponsorship deal with the movie, hence the shameless product placement of a seemingly indestructible Hitachi camcorder! No doubt the camera phone was Hitachi too.

You'd think in this day and age the design of cinemas would have been altered to eleminate them. I know very few people who like sitting in them.

Saw WOTW on Saturday night, I really enjoyed it. It was very faithfull to the original novel and film and as an update it worked really well.

It astonished me that it was a 12a though.

watched this over the weekend and must say that apart from the special effects I wasn't that impressed - Tom Cruise just doesn't do it for me and I felt no emotional involvement with his character at all in fact I didn't care one way or the other if he made it to his ex-wife's at all- thought the little girl was very good - Tim Robbins was suitably creepy but am looking forward more to the Jeff Wayne version that is due out in 2007/8

There are four new versions of The War of the WorlRAB, the first to be released on R1 DVD only was the extremely low budget debacle from Pengragon Pictures

The second is another low budget affair from The Asylum which was released on R1 DVD just a few days ago.

The third as you know is the Speilberg/Cruise summer blockbuster.

And the fourth is a CGI version of Jeff Waynes Musical Version which is pencilled in for a late 2007/early 2008 release. This film will feature the music from the album but it seems that it will be a new orchestral score rather than the tracks being lifted direct from the album.

It didn't seem to have any direction, and the ending was absolutely pathetic. And the BBFC's policy on 12A versus 15 nowadays appears to be "Is it a blockbuster? Will it cost the studios a fortune if we make it a 15? Will we have media pressure against us if we give it a 15?" rather than "Oh wait, this actually isn't suitable." 12A is the biggest cop-out of a ratings system I've ever seen, and the BBFC should be ashamed.

Thankyou for mentioning that Noiseboy.

That was, for me the most truly stupid and poorly thought out part of an otherwise stupid poorly thought out film.

I saw it last week. I hated it. I won't go into detail but take every negative comment in this thread and you're half way there.

Sorry, another vote for the awful camp. I couldn't stand the two kiRAB, so straight away the human interest story was lost on me (indeed the teenager was so annoying I was rooting for the Martins! and how the hell did he manage to beat them back to Boston, on his own, with all those tripoRAB about?) Cruise was a bit of a dick too, so I couldn't care a less if they lived or died or not.

What I didn't get is that every car in the country stopped, yet Cruise just jumped in one at random, started it up and off he went.

Now my temporary ban is over I can finally give my opinion, which I've been itching to do...

A real stinker. A classic example of Spielberg using all the bad ideas he has in his arsenal.

I had to wonder why the EMP's destroyed everything except the video camera we got our first look at the tripoRAB through.... hmmm!

Full of plot holes, and ideas put in to look cool, but not designed to make any sense.

The ending was rushed and made absolutely ZERO sense!

I havn't yet seen the film. Like is often the case, I am disappointed that they have moved it to the US and changed the year it was set. I'm am still looking forward to seeing the film.

My GF went out and bought me the Jeff Wayne CD remixed in 5.1 SACD this weekend. Stunning remix. :) And now you lot tell me Jeff is releasing a film to. Pleased doesn't do justice to what I am thinking. :D I can't wait and no doubt I shall compare both stories and find the Cruse version a little lacking but we shall see. ;)

Liked the special effects!

Hated the kiRAB

Couldnt care if they lived or died so the human element was gone for me from that point onward.

The end was pretty much like it should have been they just wasted far to much time in that dam basement so you thought the ending was rushed.

Okish

She was probably the best actor in the thing... The son and the Cruiser completely stank the screen to smithereens!

I have to say I thought this movie was fanstastic. The best thing about it was that the movie was bigger than it's special effects. For once special effects were there to enhance the movie and not make the whole thing.

Very suspenseful. However I cannot wait to see the Jeff Wayne version as have been a huge fan for years and years :)

MILD SPOILERS!

Enjoyed it, but the ending was weak and hurried.
The alien's plan of attack seemed a bit odd too - why bury the ships underground if you're going to beam into them, anyway, why not just attack from 'space' after knocking out the electronics? If the aliens had indeed put them there years ago, surely they'd have shiny new and improved war machines to show off too?
And the EMP thing... Cameras and camera phones aside, modern cars have electronic parts but older ones don't so old bangers would still have been mobile. It's just a plot device I suppose to get Tom and co moving.
Oh, and the electronics in the TV truck were still working, unless they had access to military shielding from the convoy they were with.

I dunno if it's been posted before (sorry if it has) but how did the aliens die? I was staring into space near the end (not out of boredom.. just was) and missed it. the narrator guy didnt help either. Is it 'cause they caught a cold off the humans? If yes how did they explain it? :S

Saw it yesterday, was a real dissapointment for me, I read the book and loved it as a child, this should not have been moved in time and there was not enough battles between humans and aliens (no mention of them being Martian). Also it really sank at the end and was a total anti-climax.

Why must hollywood put kiRAB in these movies there's no need for it (the 1960s one managed pretty well without dragging screaming little girls and moody teens around).

There are three WotW movies out this year Spielbergs, one with Jake Busy (avoid at all costs) and the one set in Victorian England by Pendragon Pictures (not that much better), hopefully Jeff Waynes animated one in 2008 will save the day.

For me ID4 is almost a better interpretation of the book even with all the American flag waving and Mars Attacks!!! at least has Martians ...ack, ack, ack.
