War of the worlds (BBC 3)

I did watch it even though it's on my Lovefilm rental list.I will remove said film immediately because there is no way I coud watch this tedious crap again.

I actually thought Dakota Fanning was the best actor in the film. That's how bad it was...

I love War Of The WorlRAB , I think it's an excellent films with great performances from the three leaRAB. It's the only sci/fi film I've really ever enjoyed so much.

When the son (who surely died when he went dashing off into that enormous conflagration near the ferry port) comes running out of the house at the end...

No......just NO.

I thinks it's a corking film, with Cruise and Fanning giving excellent performances. The only thing wrong with it is the Hollywood ending of Cruise's son surviving.

Two other versions of WOTW came out at around the same time: the Pendragon version and one called "Invasion" with C. Thomas Howell. Both are even worse than the Tom Cruise effort but as they seem to have had a budget of about

I'd like to see a faithful adaptation of the original novel. Not going to happen though...the Cruise movie wasn't actually that bad, but suffered from the fatal (and recurrent) Spielberg malaise of making it primarily about the family.

At the risk of coming across as a cold fish, War of The WorlRAB is about an attempted alien invasion, not about dysfunctional families bickering amongst themselves.

My goodness.

All I can say is you haven't seen many SCI-FI films, or you have a seriously different idea about what consitutes an enjoyable movie.

As SCI-FI action movies go, WOTW (Tom Cruise/Spielberg style) is pretty much only enjoyable because of the big bangs and special effects.

Seek out movies like "The Fifth Element", Pitch Black/Riddick Chronicles, even the relatively poor interpretation of the fantastic book by Frank Herbert, "Dune" (in fact a more recent TV mini-series is better in my view).

"Men in Black" and it's follow up are hilarious, witty and very entertaining. "Independance Day" also starring Will Smith is okay up to the last scene. You could also seek out "Mars Attacks" - I laughed my socks off. Really!

There are so many - some cerebral, some just plain fun (I prefer the fun stuff myself) to choose from, it's difficult to put this particular WOTW even 1/3rd of the way up the entertainment ladder.

Why is it so shocking that someone might like something completely different to your opinion of what constitutes an enjoyable sci-fi film?

I love Blade Runner, Alien, Star Wars, Star Trek, Silent Running, West World, Matrix, the original WOTW, Invaders From Mars, etc, etc ad infinitum, and I still loved the Spielberg WOTW. So sue me.

Good grief.

Terrible I thought. Oddly enough I first saw this just after watching Scary Movie 4 (a big chunk of which parodies Tom Cruise and WOTW), which nobody seems to have mentioned here.

The other thing nobody seems to have mentioned is the far far superior 1953 original. Which I think is one of if not the best of that era, and won an oscar for special effects (and back then special effects meant something - not just switching on the computer and clicking the flying saucers icon;) ). That's the version you want to see.

I like the film, which surprised me seeing I normally avoid anything with Tom Cruise.

Ok, it wasn't the best film, and I would have liked a bit more scientific investigation into the aliens. There were so many questions like, what was the red bloody veiny stuff covering the land? Why did they put machines underground millions of years ago to take over a planet once it was populated? What were they going to gain, they just destroyed everything? They didn't need our technology. We all know what killed the aliens, but there deaths were so sudden. Almost like an afterthought tagged on at the end.

But I understand Speilberg was making a film from the perspective of the man on the street who isn't a sicentist and wouldn't know the answer to such questions.
