Want to get the next best phone to the w810

must be a SE, and good backup phone, no frills phone and must be quadband, almost identical to the w810, its my primary phone, but i need a phone for my roaming sim

If quadband wasn't a requirement the K750i/W800i would have been logical "next step downs", as would the K510i, but if you do need quadband the next one I can think of is the W600i. Then we've got the W300i and Z520a below that. Out of the ones I can think of for a no-frills backup phone I'd personally pick up a cheap Z520a.

Hmm, not too many quad Sony Ericssons out there, most of the "no-frills" ones are triband.

I'd look at Z530 and the W600i for the lower-end SE quads. If SE wasn't a requirement I'd go for a Moto L6 which is relatively cheap and is either quadband or can be modded from triband to quad.

The z710i is nice. I liked the w810i, but never really was comfy with the candybar thing...and don't give a hoot about the Walkman thing, or have a real need for a multipixel camera. So, the z710i was the logical choice for me, at least if I wanted to continue my transformation into a Sony Ericsson user.

It has the same UI as the w810i, RF is almost as good, it will handle a larger-capacity Memory Stick, and has a great monochrome outside screen that displays info w/o having to open the flip. Build quality is at least as good as the w810i, with no creaks or squeaks so far. And...the best thing for me...the earpiece volume is far superior to the w810i in loudness. Call quality is also good on both ends, as it was on the w810i.

I have to admit that I miss the "coolness" of the w810i, and I might buy another one later for a toy, but the z710i is a super phone for someone like me that doesn't care about all the toys, bells & buzzers...just wants a great mobile phone, with maybe a few toys.

You will like the z710i...plus it can be flashed with the w710i software with Wotanserver if you want the Walkman capability.

I like the black case of the z710i over the "sporty" w710i. Just looks classier. I still think the K790/W800 is the best SE phone to date though, especially in Allure Brown.

Yeah, people overseas wonder why the flip/clamshell form factor is so popular stateside. It's because the flip mechanism serves some really good functions like flip open to answer and flip close to hang up, which is a huge advantage over bar phones where you have to hunt for an "answer" key. Even with an anykey answer feature you could inadvertently pick up a call that you don't want to answer. Some may argue that slider phones provide the same functionality, but unlike slider phones the main screen is protected when closed on flip/clamshells.
