Want to buy a new TV - what should I know?

I'm hoping to purchase a new TV, but I don't understand what to look for. I'm told get plasma, but then someone else says to get LCD. What is 1080p and 720p?
What should you look for in a response time?
If you get an HD tv, does regular cable look ok (like it would on a non HD tv)?

Help!!!
