Want 'best' unlocked phone

I want to buy an unlocked phone with the latest OS version.

Need to use it mostly in US, but international (Mexico, France, etc) as well.


Not concerned about price but don't think I should get something
too far from standard. Don't want to hack or mod it and want a model
I could get serviced if needed.

Seems Nexus One is on the list but which others might I think about?

To help You better tell us you carrier in the US because if you like to use data the devices fit AT&T is not the same as T-Mobile they have diferent 3G bands
 
Not at all sure which carrier I would select.

I already have an iphone but my ATT service here is very spotty.

Is T-Mobile my only other option? I am in California.
 
well, i'm going to assume that you're gonna want 3g data. nexus one supports tmobile 3g bands (i don't think it supports att bands?). but the carrier also really depends on the area. it looks like you're travelling a lot, so i can't say for sure, but for me, tmobile gets much better service in my area. you might want to talk to some of your friends with tmobile and see how their reception is.
 
Nexus doe support AT&T 3G bands, provided you buy the AT&T version of the Nexus.

As Wonsanim pointed out, T-Mo uses different 3G frequencies then AT&T, so if you buy a T-MO nexus, then you'll only get Edge speeds on AT&T and vice versus.

I have the AT&T N1 and its a great phone.
