Waking up during surgery

My sister is having surgery, Nov. 18th and she is terrified d/t a previous surgery where she "woke up" right in the middle of it.

Has this happened to anyone else? What can they do for this problem?

When this happened to her, she started hyperventillating and gagging, form the tube in her throat. At 1st they didn't seem to notice/hear her, but finally took the tube out. - She said it was the worst feeling she's ever had and after it was out, threw up. Needless to say the whole experience was a nightmare.

Any advice appreciated.

I had this happen to me when I had bunion surgery. I lifted my head up, said "Excuse me, but I can feel that." You should have seen the looks on their faces!

It seems that I metabolise anesthiesa extremely rapidly. My doctor told my hubby that I had enough in me for 4 people. By the time I got to recovery I was wide awake and chipper as could be...Got home and crashed for 6 hours... The same thing happened the next time I had the other foot done.

What you sister needs to do is to sit down with the anesthesiologist and tell him/her what happened last time-with a copy of her records if she has them so they are made aware of the issues. They will then be prepared to watch out for level of consciencousness. It is just an easy thing to watch for . They can very easily keep her under with a little extra work.

When I notified my doc. of my issues when I had my back surgery, he was most appreciative. He said that is something that they need to know as it helps them with how they medicate you for your surgery..
 
This thread gave me chills up my spine. I would be horrified and messed up mentally for the rest of my life if this happened to me. I would freak out. Sorry your sister had to go through that. Take his advice and have her inform her doctor of this. The more they know the better.
