Wacom intuos small vs. Bamboo fun medium?

I want to purchase a tablet to take notes on at school. My budget is about 200. I noticed I can get a refurbished Intuos 4 small for under 200 or a medium bamboo fun. I like the size of the bamboo fun but apparently the USB is not removable (while the Intuos' cord is) and I read that if you break it, the unit is trash. Since I will be taking it in and out of my backpack several times a day, I am not sure if the cord would handle it. On the other hand, the Intuos has a smaller active area ( this based on pictures alone because I have never used either of them). Is the smaller active area harder to use as a substitute for notebook paper?

In summary,
Intuos 4 small vs. Bamboo Fun medium
Detachable USB vs. Attached USB
Smaller active area vs. Larger active area

Thanks
