VW jetta 2000 Starts when connected to another car but dies right after?

My fan was staying on so I disconnected the negative cable of the battery . After I reconnected it the car wouldnt start. and I got a new flashing symbol on my dash of a car with a key in it. So after that I tried to get a boost, When I get a boost it starts but dies quickly after, If i hold the key in ignition it will keep going but will make an awful engine sound while running. please help!
 
Your battery is done it is not holding a charge which is being provided by the alternator. Or the alternator may not be charging the battery, they both need to be checked, but I suspect the battery first. Good-Luck..
