VRAM needed for a photo-realistic game?

How much VRAM (video memory) would you need for a video game that uses photo-realistic graphics? Any sources wouldn't be unwelcome.

Usually at least 1gb of VRAM is nice to have. I only have a 512mb card, but it doesn't get me that far.

Of course, 1gb should be fine. You just need a great processor, as well. If the game's going to be photo-realistic, it's going to take a toll on your processor with its physics engine and AI.
