Voting for independent candidates in the UK General Election?

Hoping someone can advise me on what might seem like a stupid question... After spending the last few weeks carefully considering which party to vote for in the upcoming election, I've just discovered that none of the three main ones are actually represented in my constituency, leaving me with the choice of a UKIP candidate, a BNP candidate and three independents. Based on my understanding of how the election works (this is only the second time I've been elligible to vote and I can barely remember what I did five minutes ago, let alone five years) - I vote for who I want to be my local MP who then wins a seat for his/her party and the party with the most seats, inevitably one of the big three, forms a government - does this effectively mean I've lost my ability to help decide who runs the country?

As I said, this will probably sound like a stupid question to many and apologies if I'm appearing ignorant but to be honest I'm struggling to get my head round the whole thing! Surely by voting for an independent you're potentially getting a better deal for your local area but forfeiting your say in who runs the whole country? Have I missed something glaringly obvious?! Thanks.
