Viz to publish five One Piece volumes a month in 2010

I'm as excited about this as my wallet is scared to death. There goes a lot of my summer work money. But I'll wait until Right Stuf has a 40% off Viz sale and order as many as possible then. Other than the fact that most people won't want to buy 30 volumes of One Piece over 6 months, there's only one real problem. Maybe I'm not getting something, but it seems to me like Viz is skipping ahead 30 volumes for the January issue of Shonen Jump (which comes out in Deceraber, or Noveraber to subscribers), then STARTING to release the 30 volumes they skipped for the next 6 months. This is completely pointless and just plain stupid.

Great News for one piece fans. I Lost intrest in the series a few years back though (Mainly because of things that bugged me about certain characters.) But overall its still a great series, im glad its getting some more promotion, Next thing you know will ne having a Bleach Nation.

Now If Viz announced a Dub of Dr. Slump (i know its getting old) I would Scream like a british school girl!

Nice to know FUNi's release won't catch up to the manga anymore. I was going to laugh if that had happened.

I think I'm going to hope Viz does something like they did with: Naruto part 1, Death Note, DBZ, and Dragonball and release a very large box set sometime next year (if it happens, I'd guess it would be Holidays 2010) that way I could just buy a whole bunch at once and have a nice box to hold them in.

Well the first thing, nobody told them they have to buy them all at once. Those who can buy them will obviously do so, and those who can't will just have to buy what they can when they can, nobody is forcing anyone to do/buy anything.

They did something similar with Naruto Part 2, though they didn't skip as far ahead. They started Pt. 2 in Jump and (someone can correct me if I'm wrong about this) continued the chapters until the last part they showed was the meeting with Sasuke. After that they took it out, released 10 volumes (35-44) and then brought it back to Jump starting with a chapter from late volume 45.

No way. Not Viz. FUNi should get it.

Anyway, I know this can be confusing to some people, but really, whose fault was it? The sales must've been obviously good to do something like this, so it's Viz's fault that the manga was moving at such a slow pace. Besides, it's not like you have to buy five volumes a month anyway.

They skipped ahead for Naruto and they obviously didn't have many problems with it, so why would they have problems with One Piece?

Because they're skipping a lot more with One Piece and they are skipping important things along the way. That could potentially be a problem for new readers but it's freak'n great for long time fans.

Yeah, but in that case they ran it in Shonen Jump, then took it out and released the volumes quickly, then put it back in Shonen Jump after the point where they volumes they released in that time stopped. In this case, they're starting what's in Shonen Jump after the point where they volumes will end, and they're starting to release those volumes at the same time. Therefore, anyone who wants to know what's going on has to wait until June to read the January issue of Shonen Jump.

JUMP will probably sum up what happened in the skipped volumes. Even so, look at like with DBZ. Nobody knew what had happened beforehand back in those days but people still bought into it.

I'm sure they'll sum it up, but it's pointless and bass-ackwarRAB. As for DBZ, more people probably knew what had happened beforehand thanks to the anime than had heard of Shonen Jump when it started.

This is fantastic! I am definitely going to invest in Volumes 1-21 now and then buy the five volumes as they come out. Then maybe I can do one manga volume review a week on my podcast as they come out. This is going to be awesome.

Oh man. SWEET. I mean, I don't buy the individual volumes - since I get Shonen Jump monthly and buy the DVRAB, it kinda feels like overkill, ya know? - but getting far ahead in the serialization... good stuff. Thankfully I've been mostly familiar with the plot up to currentish, and re-affirmed the familiarity in preparation for the simulcasts. One Piece Wiki is a beautiful place.

While I do KINDA worry about people being lost... the real beauty of One Piece is in it's general simplicity. While, yes, knowing all the motivations and plotlines and characters is useful, a person can hop on at any time. You don't need to see Baroque Works to understand Skypeia, y'know? Luffy wants to find One Piece. Nami navigates. Usopp's a sissy. Zoro is awesome. There are certainly subtleties you'll miss out on, like the parallel between Luffy and Shanks during the Jaya Arc, or why the crew doesn't fully trust Robin, but the general gist is fairly clear.

Plus, they'll probably do the summaries, like they did with Naruto. So new readers will have a general idea. And, really, how many of us can say we started watching a show like One Piece from the VERY START. My first exposure was a few chapters of the Buggy Arc, then I started getting the serialized Shonen Jumps during Arlong. Naruto? I didn't really start reading/watching until the Chunin Exams. While context helps you understand a story to the fullest, with these types of stories, you don't honestly NEED it.

So, I'm betting they'll continue One Piece 'til the end of the Baroque Works Arc in Shonen Jump, then drop it for a few months and bring it back at Impel Down - which I know next to nothing about, so, yay a virgin read! I haven't had THAT since... ever, actually, with One Piece! And man, I was thinking a while ago that, at some point, Shonen Jump will be sending out issues with the last four chapters, fresh from Japan. Doesn't seem too far off.

Yeah, I'm one of those people as well, I just keep buying the new One Piece volumes whenever they came out instead of Shonen Jump when I realized that the only series I read in it was One Piece.

Well job hunting, time to do it more ferociously.

But you DO have to admit that there are things that Oda brings back from a long time ago... (you know, like Brook's nakama and Iron Mask Duval) And it just takes away from that if you haven't seen/read what was brought back in the first place.

This is excellent news. While for now I just plan to stick to collecting the DVRAB, this is great to hear simply as a One Piece fan. It's great to hear the series must be doing well enough to warrant this despite the slowness of its releases up until this point. I'm always happy to hear about good things happening that are One Piece-related, so hooray

It had already been revealed that Viz was going to jump ahead to the current storyline, and now we know it will be January. It had already been revealed that Viz would publish multiple volumes each month to catch up, and now we know its 5. For those who are overreacting and celebrating like its new news, go read the old threaRAB. For those who are glad we now know the specifics, all I can say is it's about time.

They didn't specify that there would be multiple volumes released per month. Hell, they didn't even mention a speed-up of any kind for the graphic novels in the initial press release. (though we knew it was coming.)

Five volumes a month. Not even Naruto got that many released in either Naruto Nation. Many, including myself, we're guessing either one or two volumes a month but not five. So its easy to see why people are freaking out.

...That's it, between this and the sped-up DVD releases, it looks like One Piece has officially "got me heart and soul", or at least my wallet.

Now all Viz has to do is a Bleach Nation, and they'll have all the big manga series caught up-to-date.
