It's about damned time! Viz is finally going to speed up One Piece with FIVE volumes a month! They plan to get 30 volumes out in the first six months of next year. Also, they're going to skip to Impel Down in the January issue of Shonen Jump, which should come out in Noveraber.

That's a nice speed-up.

Way to go VIZ! I don't read the manga, but I do plan on doing so in the future (I'm just so used to One Piece in anime format I'm sticking with it that way until it's over.)

With the speed up in DVD releases I'd say One Piece is getting a really nice treatment in America right now aside from the fact that it's not on TV. (which isn't really FUNimation's fault, is it?)

Fantastic!

I guess I should start collecting what's been published so far beyond 1-4. I'm gonna need a manga sale.

Sigh... is it too much to ask for them to republish with the name Zoro? I guess there's no going back on that now.

I'm not very surprised, considering how well this strategy worked for Naruto. Definitely awesome news for One Piece fans, although I'm personally going to go on collecting just the animation for now.

Are you guys really excited about this? Do you want to blow that much money at once? I know you all really love One Piece, but that's 240 dollars over six months... that's a lot of money. You know how much this is going to alienate the people who aren't hardcore otaku like the people on this forum? Skipping like 2/3 of a manga's story then plowing on ahead like nothing happened? I mean, they're going to be starting Impel Down before the rest has even been released in graphic novel form. Everyone who isn't a super Shonen Jump afficionado like most TZers is going to be totally alienated and confused by this.

Man, my B&N's going to need a whole new shelf now! O.o

Ten bucks says after the Septeraber issue OP is pulled from the magizine until the January 2008 issue, which means expect the Septeraber issue to be 6 chapters long (to finish the current volume). The rest of the 2009 issues will most likely sum up the skipped volumes (ala Naruto).

Wow, this is big news for One Piece fans. However, isn't this more overkill than even the 2 Naruto Nations? I believe those were only 2 volumes a month at the most.

One Piece's manga is WAY behind where it is in Japan. It's so behind that it requires actions like this to even attempt to redeem it at all.

You think there are a lot of people that subscribe to shonen jump and don't collect graphic novels? I'm not so sure about that.

Besides, I don't subscribe to shonen jump and even I know that the magazine hasn't been very good about being methodical and kind to totally new readers. For better or worse, this is nothing new.

I could see where this could be a problem. Skipping ahead in Naruto... it doesn't really confuse readers much. Skipping from the end of Alabasta to Impel Down? That leaves a LOT to be covered and more than you can sum up without confusion.

However there is something that works rather well by skipping to Impel Down.

Luffy is solo and though he comes accross old enemies, they've all been introduced already with the exception of Blackbeard but at least he has been in the show's broadcast. By the time they get back to what the other straw hats are doing they'll be caught up with the GN release probably. The only thing people will be wondering really is where the rest of the crew is and should they see the first page of some of the chapters they might wonder who the speedo man and the skeleton are.

That's a LOT of volumes though. Perhaps too many. I'm up for it but the casual consumer wont be. So they better do a good job of summing up the sagas in Shonen Jump for those who can't or don't care to buy all those volumes in 2010.

This is about the only way to get to about where Japan is in a hurry. Perhaps they shouldn't have tried to do that just yet but instead maybe just skipped Skypiea for now and published Water 7 with 4 chapters a month or something. Skipping through Water 7 and Thriller Bark leaves some notable holes but like I said... it actually works out decently enough to start at Impel Down. It almost works... too well?

Perhaps they don't mind if people don't buy all five per month? Eventually they'll be bought and if there's anyway to drum up a series, it's a big marketing campaign and power-up (the Gears).

How can I not be?

Coupons and sales, baby. I'm already formulating a plan where I buy one or two volumes per week using Borders Meraber weekly coupons (that can range anywhere from 20-50% off) and Barnes and Nobles' coupons. I'll be saving up a bit of each paycheck and any Christmas money for the expenses.

Plus it isn't like we have to buy all five volumes at once.

They dragged out the release of the volumes for way to long especially when this series had already been around for 6 years before bringing it over here in 2003. I already own the first 20 so this is awesome news.

Never read One Piece, but it seems like a good show/manga. I've always wanted it to beat 'Naruto' and 'Bleach' in sales.

But right now my pocket is kinda empty, and I'm already saving up for the next Code Geass releases as well as collecting Gurren Lagann.
