Indeed. There's pro's and con's to each method, but the thing I REALLY REALLY wish American comic book companies would adopt is an open submission policy. If Bakuman is to be believed, all you need to do to get your stuff considered for Jump is call Shueisha and set up an appointment. If they like your manuscript (they want a completed chapter or three - not just a few pages and concepts and a synopsis), or feel you have potential they'll work with you.
That's all but unheard of here unless you're already in the industry.
