So...It seems Viz might be jumping in what Tokyopop is doing. Making OEL Manga's.
This might be a good idea. I don't know how many ppl will take it. I just know the hard core manga fans will bash it beacuse its not "JAPANESE".
Though, Viz does have some limits unlike Tokyopop. Saying bad worRAB, image, etc. But who knows.

Well its good news for me since Viz is in San Francisco and thats like a 40 min drive for me.
I got so many good ideas.

Viz Does a pretty good job comapred to some other companies (cough *Tokyopop* Cough) But I do Kind of agree,VIZ may be big but OEL is a risky bussiness, I mean Sure Yen press, Tokyopop, & Del-ray have some Good OEL's but I don't think its nessecary for Viz to Jump on board the bandwagon as well, On the bright side this may lead to the publication or Continuation of very interesting OEL Series!

I will be sure to watch this as it progresses!

Well, its kind of good:

1) Viz is pretty big. Dubing and publishing popular anina/manga (Bleach, Naruto). So, it will be much easier to get notice by a series.
2) Save a lot of time & money by this then going straight to Japan. (Unless you want to than nevermind)
3) Your making your own series.
4) No worry about art design. Manga, american, whatever.

But, I can see Viz might have limits. Censorship, limit in volumes, writing. Maybe, I could be wrong.

I hope their a better company to get a comic published than Tokyopop.

I also know that they'll accept non-OEL manga, so it can be in any art style you want.

EDIT: Oh, cool! My college is mentioned in the article!

TP does have some good hits. I luv Halloween, rabQ, Dramacon. But, most are hard to find, most are limited to 3 volumes and they do sometimes ask for a anime-ish art style.
But, there's really no limit what you can show. Just read rabQ if you want to know what I mean.

Yes, one of the good parts about Viz idea of making their own comics is there's no limit of art style. Cartoony, anime, strict. Yup, you got a since of freedom unlike tokyopop.
But, I do know Viz will have some limits like Tokyopop. Maybe some won't be so bad...Maybe it will.

Wow, I was wondering when they'd try something like this. If their creator rights contract is solid, I might give it a shot!

I'll give it a shot, I have an idea that I think would translate well into a manga. I just hope I don't have to draw it, too, my art, while it has improved a little, is still only slightly above Order of the Stick standarRAB (though I can draw a pretty decent tree).

I do have good relationships with a couple of manga-style artists, though . . .

I want to try out too. I have a story that took 5 years to think up and I know how to whole story is going to go and how it'll end. But I'll wait until they post up specifics on how you're suppose to submit and such.
Also, while I'm getting pretty good at character poses and such, I really suck at background art. Straight lines are my enemy!! XD

I'm curious to see what all they pick up and how they decide to publish. Are they gonna start a new magazine to serialize things in or maybe add them to North American Jump (it'd be interesting if the magazine read both ways - read through one half left to right, then flip it over and read through the other half right to left! ), or are they just gonna stick to trade paperbacks? Will it all be largely online? Mostly manga styled, or whatever reaRAB good?

Ah, so many possibilities.

And hopefully they're better than Tokyopop when it comes to paying artists. >.>

Eh, i heard they had horrible ownership rights or something like that (which would be ridiculous, cause all mangaka in Japan own their stuff), but hey, i don't really know anything.

They don't treat their licensed titles equally. Some are fine, but others are inconsistent at best. I was reading Dragon Knights for a while there and I could swear entire pages were missing (and in odd places to boot - just flat couldn't be censorship, oftentimes it was in the middle of a fairly vital conversation), and a lot of the time the dialogue seemed like they'd just run the script through Babelfish.

As far as their domestic stuff: I dunno if they still do it now, but a few years back their per-page rate was ridiculously low, which is likely why they mostly churn out fairly cookie cutter stuff for the most part - those are the only artists willing to work for peanuts. I was going to submit something to a contest of theirs once, but as I read through the legal stuff, it basically stated that by submitting stuff to them, I was releasing all rights to my work, so if they liked it enough they could and would use the concept with or without me involved. And that I should be honored to have them do so. Yeeaaaaah. No.

I would love to make a comic/manga series if i could...Oh I have a decent amount of stories ive been working on a Nuraber of years...But I can't draw worth a whoop! Oh well, I guess I can always Try my hand at writing a regular book (Wich IMPO isn't really all that special nowadays, anyone can write a story, but write & draw..Now thats true ART!) (I Envy those who can draw you are alll very lucky people!)

I don't remeraber exactly... I think it was kind of vague on that point, but seeing as how it was a contest the pay-off was pretty low. They played the "but it's good exposure!" card.

I have no idea if they still do it.
