As a new years resolution, I plan on starting to eat healthier, exercise more frequent, and start eating vitamins. The thing is that I don't know what vitamins I should start eating. As far as I know, I'm pretty healthy and moderately active. Does anyone have any suggestions on what vitamins I should start taking?

I would go for a daily multi, preferably one with little or no iron. There are some multivitamins that are made specifically for men. Most men get ample iron from diet, and too much can be harmful, while a lot of younger women need iron supplements.

I suggest making your other resolutions a little more specific. They'll be easier to keep that way. For exercise, do you have an exercise plan? When and how will you exercise? For diet, perhaps you can pick a few nutritious fooRAB to eat more of, like veggies or whole grains, and a few unhealthy ones to cut back on, like soda or fast-food meals.

Are you trying to get stronger or bigger? Are you overweight and trying to lose? Or are you just trying to be healthier and enjoy life more?

I agree with the last post. A multivitamin would be ideal such as oneAday pill or if you find a Centrum. If you want energy go for a Vitamin B. If you want immune health go for a Vitamin C or load up on drinks that have vitamin C. One which I tend to go after instead of taking a pill is Green Tea. I believe the Lipton Green Tea is about 120% Vitamin C. Hope this helps somewhat. Keep us posted

Hmm. A multivitamin seems like a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to stop at my local pharmacy tomorrow and see what they have. Do you have any brand recommendations?

My resolution is to simply become more aware of my overall health and take steps to improve it, and I figured taking vitamins would be a good step. I rarely drink soda, but cutting fast food out of my diet is definitely ideal - I plan on preparing myself lunches for lunch break at work and school instead of stopping by a fast food restaurant.

My dad was diagnosed with diabetes a couple years ago and it runs in both sides of my family and I hear that besides genetics, diet has a lot to do with whether you get it or not, which is why I'm becoming more concerned about my diet.

I think my resolution will also be to create a work out regiment and stick to it, which I know can be difficult to create a habit, especially one that requires you to exert yourself.

As for brand look for oneAday or Centrum. I would go more for the oneAday as I see a younger group taking these. If your taking them to avoid diabetes it may help a little but it is mainly watching what you eat. If you have Big Mac's everyday you can pretty much count yourself as going to have diabetes. A multi vitamin and eating healthy with exercise and it should be fine.

A healthy young adult who eats right doesn't require supplementation.

If you're concerned, have your doctor check your B12 and vitamin D levels, both can be effected by hidden (no symptoms) health problems and environmental (non-dietary) factors.

Well I guess I'm the lone dissenter. You are young and healthy. Vitamins are fine, great actually, if you need them. At your age, not only do I think it would be a waste of $ but the whole point of vitamins is to boost some deficiency. Taking too many vitamins, when not needed, can, I think, actually weaken our system and make it dependent on supplementation. Just my take.

The best thing you can do for your body is to put healthy food into it. Healthy, unadulterated food will do more for your body than pills. I do heartily support vitamin and herb supplementation, but only when we actually need them.

All the best

Oh, didn't see MacDuff's post. Guess we are on the same page!

If you have to much of a vitamin in a given time it just becomes useless in the body. Some yes do cause several problems such as Vitamin C. If you drink a few green teas with 120% C in it, have a food with alot then have a pill that has C in it you will see some problems occur. The body can only dissolve 2000 milligram a day, which I know some vitamins have that alone in them. If you go into what is called a megadose then it will lead to diarrhea, vomiting among others.
