Visual GameBoy Advance??Pc need HELP!?

when i started playing i open my VBA click open then i click the rom then instead of bringing me to the game the emulator bring me to a WHITE SCREEN!then i tried to click directly the rom to the emulator it works but my question is is there a way to fix it...that when i click open on the emulator click the rom it will work and will not give me a white screen?
im using pokemon emerald.gba
