Okay I see your point. You can't have someone be evil as sin and do crimes against humanity, than for no reason turn good.
When I said you have to plan it from the beginning, doesn't have to be from the beginning of the series, but beginning of the season, or at least beginning of a story arc, in which you have character growth and build towards someone turning good to evil. As long as it is belivable.
Example was Xanatos turning good, which someone brought up earlier, I thought that was excellent done in the way build it up through the second half of season 2. I too question the decession of him staying good, but the way it was done in season 2, was done perfectly.
