Vietnamese culture question?

i found out that southern vietnamese people number themselves, like brother 2, sister 3, aunt 5, uncle 6, etc. and i'm just wondering WHY?! my mom is from the north and my dad is from the south and the way i was raised is that you call people by their NAMES not numbers. wth is up with the numbers? also, why do they skip the number one, theres never a brother/sister/aunt/uncle one, it starts with the number 2?

p.s my theory, though kind of far-fetch, is that people in the south are farmers and agricultural communities often have many kids because its free labor so people in the south have so many kids that they cant remember names and just give them numbers instead. =]
