Veterans' medical benefits ... any qualifications other than honorable

discharge from the military? Does the vet have to be poor? Is it free medical care or is it low-cost medical care?

Thanks in advance.
I'm asking because of a separate issue, somebody saying "all US veterans have healthcare already."

This is handled through the VA. You need to fill out all the paperwork to apply. Your income, combined with other family members, will determine how much you get free or reduced.

To have an honorable discharge is it, but it's not always "free".
When you register, they will have you fill out a form with the financial information, pretty complete I might add, and then they will determine if you qualify for free, or part pay benefits.
The same for medications, where if the total income is low enough, medications will cost you $8.00 per month, no matter the actual drug store cost, or normal retail, but if your income is higher, then a small payment will be charged.
I am on many medications, but for example, one in particular has a cost of $357.00 per month from a discount drug store, but through the VA it's only $8.00.
Although I'm not sure, I believe a medical discharge will also serve as qualification.

Depends on your status and financial situation. Regular veterans are considered Category 8. Co-payment is based on ability to pay and income.

If you have a service-connected disability, you move up the Category food chain. Over 50% is a freebie for many services. I am 100%...all my stuff is free...as is my dental care and medications. Dependents can, in some cases, be eligible for certain Tri-Care benefits. I also get about $3,000/month tax-free, so I consider it my "back pay." j/k

You need to speak with your local VA rep. or an ombudsman from AL or DAV.
