im stuck i want to go to school i have read about not having to need education to b a vet assistant but what do u do walk in to a vet office and say i want to help? how does that work? the only option i have is to take online classes because i live in the middle of no where and moving is not an option does any know how good these online classes really r ?

The school I checked out had online classes but you have to work or volunteer in an approved vet office for 20 hours a week. Your work at the clinic serves as clinicals for school and the practicing vet supervises and tests you. Upon graduation you will have a degree and be eligible for certification. Make sure any classes you take are from an accredited school. Don't fall prey to scams. Check it out with the Better Business Bureau as well.

Go to the Veterinarian you would like to work for and ask the Vet Tech or Vet Assistant there for their advice. Find out what they did. They may even be willing to let you do some volunteer work to see how you like it. Why spend money on a career you may not like. There are a lot of procedure's a Vet Tech/Assistant has to do that may make you decide it's not for you. Such as having to assist in the euthanasia of a perfectly healthy animal, or cleaning out the freezer where the dead animals are kept, or giving enemas, well you get the picture. So check with the vets in your area and see if anyone would be able to let you volunteer and while you're doing that, talk to the employees.

You could apply at your local vet for a kennel tech position just to get some practical experience but you will still need to go to school if you want to be an RVT. Some vets will hire inexperienced techs and train them for there particular needs but even with that training most states won't allow unlicensed techs to place catheters, induce pets for surgery's, take radiographs without dr supervision or intubate pets for anesthesia. Plus to make a living wage you will need to be licensed. Kennel techs and unlicensed vet assistance usually don't make much more than minimum wage so go to school or take the courses on line what ever you have to do to get licensed in your state. Its a great career. You get to be an advocate and do some wonderful things. Some of its sad. I have been doing this long enough that I have seen puppy's come in for first vaccinations and now they are old and at the end of there life. Its a wonderful thing to do. I encourage you to pursue it if it is your dream.

You don't need to go to school to be a vet assistant. All you have to do is love animals.Go to animal hospitals sites and try to apply. Is how I get my job.I'm a vet assistant for 3 years now.You can lear allot.Good luck.Oh and also depend of where you live.

U do need schooling. Jobs are getting more competitive. Online classes are OK as long as they are from an accredited collage.
