Very Tricky, Complex question on Cell fones

I've got an old Verizon Motorola fone that just died with a month left on my two-year contract. I want to get a new phone that will allow me to stay on the Verizon network until October.

In October, I want to simply leave Verizon (because I'm no longer under contract) and take the phone with me when I move to Paris. I will be staying in Paris for a year so I want a fone that can connect with a cell provider there.

What I understand is that I need a CDMA-GSM unlocked phone.

Do you think this strategy will work or can you think of a better one? If it does, any recommendation on how to get a CDMA-GSM combo unlocked phone for under $200?
 
eBay or the B/S/T forum here for a simple cheap Verizon phone. You can then spend the money on an unlocked quad band GSM phone to use in Paris on a prepaid SIM. Seriously, find the cheapest phone you can for Verizon.
 
The new Blackberry's are CDMA-GSM, but there is no way they can be had for under $200. Your only way is to find the cheapest flip you can for Verizon, sell it and then buy a GSM phone when you get to October.
 
Thanks so much!!! Really, I appreciate the advice. I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff. A VZW rep made this following suggestion:
Use my new every two to buy a fone for free. Then, in 29 days I'll end my contract and return the phone without having to pay for anything exept the final month of my contract. Think it will work?
 
It is possible, but it may just be better to buy a cheap throw away phone from eBay or here, and just ditch it after you drop Verizon. I would hate to see you "accidentally" locked into a contract again for 2 years because the rep screwed up. This close to being done with it, I wouldn't risk it.
 
I agree, something like that usually requires a new contract, so unless you can absolutely positive you are not in a contract (go to a store, record the conversation etc.) then I would just get a really cheap Verizon phone.
 
Yeah I agree. You could get a cheap phone on ebay and even if you didn't resell it it's much better than even risking a 2 year commitment. Plus I'm sure you can find a crap phone on ebay or craigslist for liek $50 and just dump it when you're done. Don't risk a 2 yr commitment. Good luck! P.S. I'm jealous that you're moving to Paris.

Also I meant to say what the rep is having you do is essentially renew your contract and then cancel at the end of the trial period; so if you miss returning by a day...you're totally SOL...why risk that when you could just buy a bum phone and junk it when done?
