about a week ago i noticed my car was starting to sound more like a 1960s dragster. I was sure the problem was exhaust related and did some inspection, no visible exhaust but the source of the noise was definitely coming right under my driver's side door (im assuming the CAT, but there was no smell) and i've had buddies who have had holes in there exhaust and am familiar with the sound, it was fairly loud but not "attention grabbing" loud.
Over the course of the week my 'Service Engine Soon" light would come on, which furthered my assumption on the exhaust problem, assuming a hole in the exhaust would tip the o2 sensor and my fuel economy has been much worse than normal. I made an appt with my mechanic for saturday just to get it checked out.
Well today i'm driving home and all of the sudden the noise of the exhaust kicks up a few decibels to EXTREMELY loud. So loud it is the only thing i can hear, it rattled the whole car, although driving it felt no different than when the noise was barely discernable
I got it parked outside right now and the source of the exhaust noise is in the same spot, however at least 10x louder, I'd look to see right now if i can see a noticeable hole but its too dark and i have no garage.
I'm certainly not gonna drive it until its solved, so i guess the question is What is to blame? could the CAT just have been so crappy that it blew a hole in it? maybe i had a small exhaust hole that has turned into something huge? also, barely any exhaust comes out of the tailpipe
the sound i hear is LOUD and it is raw, and comes from directly below where i sit in the vehicle, thats what makes me think its the CAT, but it shows all the symptoms of a big hole in the exhaust... maybe its both?
any suggestions or answers would ease my mind, although im sure eventually not my wallet
i guess i should also note that my acceleration was very sluggish during that week of noticeable noise, sometimes id have to floor it just to "register" and accelerate, especially up hills
