My second opinion Dr says I never fused. I think we already new that. He said the best route is the 360 fusion using my own bone and bmp, and will use a bones stimulator, and he said we'll do everything we can possibly do to get a solid fusion.
Are there some people that never fuse and completely and do okay, and don't have terrible pain due to that? I can't find much info on that. I'm thinking what if I don't fuse again..........will I end up in a wheelchair, or what?? Any similar stories or does anyone know any more about this. I'm petrified. Can't sleep and I'm afraid to be alone..................and thats so not me. I wasnt that way until I knew I was going in again. Then the next day the pain got worse. Seemed like a couldn't walk more than 3 or 4 steps. I've stayed down alternating heat and Ice, and taking my pain meRAB. My fronts of my legs are so weak. Hopefully its just from being in bed a few days. Right away I'm thinking something neurological going on. Reflexes seem good in each leg, they're just like rubber. Maybe I'm so distraught over all this, thats how its showing........... Long story. I have some previous threaRAB here telling the whole story., but I wrote a book already. Scared In Indiana

Queenie, I'm so sorry that you didn't fuse. I know that's got to be a tough pill to swallow.

Are you happy with your second opinion doctor? Will you be comfortable with him doing the surgery?

I was at higher risk to not fuse, partly due to osteoporosis and partly due to the large nuraber of levels I was having done. They used BMP and cadaver bone for me, a bone growth stimulator, and did the 360. All of those have proven track recorRAB to improving the chances of fusion happening. If you smoke, it will help to stop, and I've heard that diet soda can also impede fusion, though I have no idea why. Do everything you can to help it get going, and then try not to worry about it. Don't even start thinking about what if this or that. No need to go there yet! You have a good chance of fusing with all your doctor wants to throw at you this time. I was showing bone growth at only 6 weeks! That's unusual, but if it can happen to me, who was at higher risk to not fuse at all, it can happen to you, too. Maybe not quite as fast, but you just do everything you can, be super careful not to bend, lift, or twist, and walk-walk-walk as much as you can tolerate after the surgery. Try to keep your thoughts positive. I'm sure that's hard, as you think about going through this all over again, but it sounRAB like your doctor has a good plan and knows what he's doing.

Do you have a surgery date yet?

You hang in there, sweetie! We're here and are pulling for you! If there's anything we can do to help, you give us a shout!!! We'll do our best!

Hugs,
Emily

awwwwwwwwwww queenie, I am so sorry you have are having bad days but, I think I would be just like you. Maybe try to stay focused on doing the surgery again and having a "better" recovery this time. To tell you the truth, I sit and worry some about myself fusing. I am a SMOKER. :( I am ashamed to type that as I know it can hinder a fusion. I am just hoping it does.....I had a cervical fusion years ago and I smoked then and I did fuse. So....I am crossing my fingers. My question is.....if a person is doing great, very, very low pain at 6 weeks out, is that a good indication I am fusing? When did you have the first fusion? and did you hurt after the surgery for a long while never feeling any better? gosh, I sit here thinking if I were in your shoes....that would totally suck. I feel for you truely :( I hope you will at least have somewhat of a few decent days before your surgery....please keep in touch!

For what its worth...if I never fuse... I feel like the 360 has me pretty darn stable...I can just feel it and Im a big guy that is very active in the construction world...not that it matters but Im 6 foot tall and weigh 270lbs so if it can make me feel comfortable stable wise then I'm sure it can hold most together without fusion....thats looking at the down side....Im sure I will fuse...I bet you will fuse too....mainly because of the success rates....dont smoke...use a stimulator if possible....walk as much as possible....ask if using your own bone increases the chance...if not use the bank....Im serious ...they say the hip bone site is painful....but I would have done it if I knew to ask and got better odRAB of fusion.

just use the best doctor you can.....;)

Using your own bone and the BMP is the "gold standard" right now for fusion. Along with a bone growth stimulator I bet you will do great the second time!!! The docs were going to use bone from my iileac crest (pelvic) but when they opened my back there were so many bone spurs thay just shaved them off and ground them up to mix with the BMP. My doc said he never doubted for a minute I would fuse and he was right. I was almost 100 pounRAB overweight at the time tho not a smoker.
I would do this again. I am better now than I was before. I would say I do 90% of everything I used to do!
Blessings,
Michelle
