Many of you may have heard about the new Verizon Wireless WiFi service available to ALL mobile broadband customers, regardless of if they're on the $39.99 plan or the $59.99 plan.
This is something that makes Verizon a step (maybe even two steps) ahead of the competition, especially the competition called AT&T Mobility. It seems ironic that AT&T DSL has free wireless hotspots nationwide but AT&T Mobility cannot open this up to their customers.
I called AT&T recently to see if this was available to their customers that are using their Mobile Broadband services. "This service will be available to customers using the $59.99 5GB per month mobile broadband plan in areas where 3G coverage does not exist. This change will occur in mid January." This basically means that AT&T will have something very similar but it will only work with the one plan and ONLY in areas where 3G coverage is non-existent. They have no intents on making it a national hotspot service.
The WiFi with Verizon Wireless works slightly faster than their standard EV-DO rev. A network. You must use the VZAccess manager to connect to this service. Whenever I first try and connect, it gives me an error message saying I didn't get authenticated. Once I retry, it goes through with no problem.
Verizon Wireless does not own nor maintain any of these WiFi hotspots. They are usually owned and operated by AT&T Communications and Verizon Wireless is a "certified WiFi roaming partner".
Verizon Wireless has WiFi hotspots nation and worldwide. The WiFi hotspots are completely free when connecting in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. When connecting in areas like Italy or other parts of the world, you must be on a Global Broadband plan and you may still be charged roaming rates (much cheaper than paying the standard pay per use roaming for using the network) and it doesn't come out of the extremely limited 100 or 200 MB plan allowance.
AT&T DSL (not Mobility) offers international WiFi hotspots for free for SOME customers. If you have the $19.99 WiFi Premier plan with AT&T...you should be good to go.
