verizon wireless phone help?

i am ready for a phone upgrade. right now i have the razr. i am planning on getting the voyager. i really just want a phone with a qwerty keyboard and i don't want the env.

my question is...

if i get a smartphone would i have to pay for services such as the internet... what would come with the phone that doesnt have monthly fees and what would that does...
the stuff that you would have to pay monthly fees for, could you just cancel it?
