Verizon Palm Treo Help?

my brother gave me his palm treo 700 cell phone, it used to work just fine, but he has kept it off charge for the longest, but when i plug in the charger the phone dosnt come one or even shows a light or anything. so i open the back of the phone and take out the battery and the first terminals in the back is placed diffrently then the rest. but is still touching the battery when i put it back in and it still wont charge. how do i fix this problem. i thank i have the right charger, its a small short sqaure charger that has two little gold pieces on the side and when i plug it in nothing happens i had the charger in the phone all night and day. PLEASE help
