Verizon or Sprint phone with Internet???

I'm looking to either upgrade my Verizon phone (LG VX4500, which has terrible signal reception for some reason - my family has 3 (all with the same problem)) to a more versatile phone. What would be a feature-rich phone that is capable plugging into my 12" PowerBook via USB like a datacable that would double as a EV-DO type device allowing me to get internet/email anywhere. Yes, a PDA/Smartphone, would be more ideal, but I can't justify that much money. 90% of my mobile use - all I need is just a cellphone, and for the times i travel or are out of WiFi range with my laptop, it would be cool to just plug in my phone and have internet if/when I need it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
William

I don't have the phone info for ya, but I just switched from verizon (unlimited means email and light web browsing only) to sprint (advertises streaming a/v) and the data card gets twice the downstream that the other did. And sprint's customer service can't be beat (trust me, you'll want to try) but the bandwith is there. Also, compare prices... Sprint is $15 for unlimited evdo on your phone. When you're saving $30/month on the service, the price of the pda phone doesn't seem quite so bad either.

Good luck,

So, can you get EV-DO service on capable phones, and then plug them into your laptop to get internet on it as well? And for clarification, the 12" PowerBook does not have a PCI card slot, so the wireless cards are not an option for me. Good to hear nice things about Sprint though, and their prices are a nice factor.

I am in the same boat with my Verizon VX8000. It has been a good phone for the past 2 years but the display is starting to get flaky. I was thinking of jumping to Sprint and was wondering if you can use the internet feature lightly if you don't abuse it like Verizon. I use my VX8000 phone just for checking email and downloading an occasional update or two (less than 5MB). Can you do this with Sprint if you don't subscribe to any EVDO plan? I have been told if you abuse your download bandwith with Verzion they will shut you down. I don't use my phone as a modem very heavily and haven't been bothered by them which makes me reluctant to switch but I am gonna have to get a new phone pretty soon.
