Verizon-mac free tethering?

I have Verizon cell service, currently without internet. I just moved to a house with no internet connection that cannot support a DSL hookup. So I was looking for cheapest wireless options for my mac laptop. So far I think I have figured out (and please correct me if i'm wrong), I can get unlimited internet on my phone for $30/month and then "tether" the phone to my mac. But only certain phones will allow me to do this for free without using a tethering fee? Where can I find a list of these phones?
 
You need a broadband capable phone, and get a mobile broadband plan. Otherwise you can rack up hundreds of dollars a month in charges, because tethering is strictly prohibited in your contract. One guy on here racked up $1500 in one month tethering his computer to his phone and going on the internet with it. Regular internet packages on Verizon are for your phone, not your computer.
