Verizon Cell Phone Service Question?

I was talking to my friend last night and all of the sudden it said delivery to destination failed, it makes no sense I didn't accidentally block my texting and I do have money on my account. I decided to call and it went straight to their voice mail. I know they couldn't have blocked their texting within one minute of talking. Does this happen if someones not in service.... im so lost
Yes I do have service as well... I cant text but if I call it goes right to voicemail.
