Verifying for financial aid for college?

Recently, my freind who is going to UC San Diego told me that he, unfortunately, missed his deadline of may 1st to file in documentation to verify for financial aid or something along those lines and is now at risk of losing his financial aid money. My other freind who is going to UC Davis has a deadline for June 1st and is taking care of his paperwork for verification right now. As for me, I am going to UC Berkeley in the Spring and was wondering how I would do this verification process. I do not want to lose my financial aid :[ Ive tried to contact Cal about this through email but they take too long to respond. So would I have to send in documents or something to prove that I qualify for aid? Or is it based on selection, as I have done a bit of research and found that colleges only ask for about 1/3 of their new students to verify? Thanks to anyone who can provide me an answer to ease my fears.
