I have used a vcr for over 20 years. I tape movies for my mother and give them to her to watch. She lives a couple of blocks from me. She does not have cable and only uses a roof antenna, thats why I tape movies for her from my cable stations. Exactly what is this DVR? Can I still tape movies for my mom or is just connected to my tv for me to use only?

The terminology is confusing. I suspect what you mean by DVR is a DVD recorder, that records TV content on a DVD disc. The device's often have their own tuner, so you can program them to record, just like the VCR tape recorders. You can use what are called re-writable DVD discs (DVD-RW or DVD+RW), so that you aren't consnatly paying for discs like with the DVD-R and DVD+R one-time-use discs.

Of course, to use a DVD recorder, your Mom would have to have a DVD player.
