VCD to palm

Hi,

I know this subject has been talked abt before, but im stil unclear as to how it can work.

I've been wanting to transfer this VCD to my palm, but i've been unable to do so using either tealmovie or pocketdivxencoder. Apparently because the VCD is in DAT. format. Is there a way to bypass this DAT. format or is there a program to convert DAT. file to more palm-friendly formats? THanks.

Hiya.
Yeah althought the VCD's movie is actually formatted in MPEG 1 format, the files on the disc won't be .mpg. The files containing the video will also be with various other files to make the thing work on a VCD player or DVD Player (menu files and stuff). In the same way, although DVD video is formatted in MPEG 2, you won't see MPEG 2 files on the DVD disc, rather .vob (containing the MPEG2) and other files.....

You need to get the data off the vcd, into a .mpg file which PocketDivXEncoder can then encode for you. What you are in effect doing, is ripping the VCD to your hard drive and into an mpg file.

A quick search brought up a guide here- I haven't tried it as I haven't got any VCD's... But it should work:

Once you have your Mpg file extracted, open it up in PocketDivXEncoder and use settings mentioned in other threads in this forum, which it sounds like you've seen.

If the mpg extracting guide doesn't work, let me know and we'll get the mpg some other way.

Hope that helps

I do this exact process to get some movies off (S)VCD and on to my Palm so my two youngest kids can be entertained when we're all forced to go mall shopping, etc. I use a program called VCDEasy to create and burn my VCDs and SVCDs, and it also has a function for "ripping" a VCD back to MPEG format, which can then be easily converted to DivX for your Palm using PocketDivXEncoder.

There is a freeware and a shareware version of VCDEasy, and I've had a copy of it from way back. I just checked and the VCD rip function was included back in v1.01 or something, which is still the freeware version.

You can check it out at http://www.vcdeasy.org.

I've been loving life (as have my kids) with VCDEasy, PocketDivXEncoder, MMPlayer, and my T2! I always have the latest Daily Show with Jon Stewart on my Palm for those heavy traffic or waiting in a line moments.
