Vatican Declares Homer Simpson Is Catholic

Um, Homer isn't Catholic. This has been established in many episodes:

"Homer Simpson in Kidney Trouble"
Marge: Shouldn't you give him [Grampa] last rites?
Lovejoy: That's Catholic, Marge. You might as well ask me to do a voodoo dance!

"The Frying Game":
Lovejoy gets into a fight with a Catholic priest on his way out of Homer's cell.

In another episode, it's established that the Simpson's religion is The Western Branch of American Reform Presbylutheranism.
 
Haha, that's funny, even if it's not really true. I'm a Catholic girl myself, but I don't really watch the Simpsons very often. Maybe they meant Homer has some Catholic sensibilities, rather than actually being a Catholic?
 
This was actually my thoughts when I first saw the thread. I remember there being dialogue that outright stated that The Simpsons family isn't Catholic. Hell, there was an episode where Homer and Bart were converted to Catholic, but the status quo changed that.

Though I do love Al Jean's comment towards this ordeal
 
I think they are referring to a particular episode. And I wonder if there are differences in the Italian translation.


And I haven't been able to obtain the referenced article from LA CIVILT? CATTOLICA, but here is article from L'Osservatore Romano, with possible translation errors.
 
Well, in their defense, in "Homer The Heretic", he is seen communing in nature with animals. which is something often seen with St. Francis of Assisi.

Maybe they're going by that?
 
I was thinking along those lines as well, but I figure they're using Homer Simpson because he's more well known across the world than Peter Griffin is.
 
As a catholic myself, I think it's kinda cool the Vatican considers Homer one of us. I also heard the Vatican say that the show is OK for families to watch. :D
 
Not trusting E! as a reliable source, i decided to check out some Catholic news sites. Got nothing on the front pages, so i had to do a search.

I agree, the opening of the article was not meant to be a literal statement. It was a hook to draw in readers. Which worked, although sadly, no one has actually commented on the actual article.

Although this hasn't really made everyone happy, as one Comment from the above link stated: WHEN IS THE POPE GOING TO BE SUFFICIENTLY EMBARASSED BY THE EDITOR OF HIS OWN NEWSPAPER, AND FIRE HIM?


This coming from a guy who lives in a culture where the majority of its media sources are spent on Pop Stars, cartoons, and reality shows than covering news. And then complains about one article in a newspaper.

And no, i don't think Familly Guy is going get very high praise. I'd discuss that, but that would lead into more trouble than its worth.

Edit: I also have to point out the E! article headline is misleading. How the article portrays it would be like reporting what the Washington Post writes as the government's own opinion.

I also tried commenting on it, pointing out the inadequacies of the article. However, the comment section "appears" to be off line. I guess they did want anyone to call them out.
