Vanilla Sky

When Tom met Penelope, one of them thought that a remake of a crap film she'd been in, with him starring alongside her in the new version, would be a good idea.

Which of course it wasn't. You can't polish a turd.

I wouldn''t say I can explain it like you're a little kid, but I'll give it a go

I found this bit on a website somewhere:

"Tom Cruise plays David Aames, a young, good-looking, brash, confident ladies man who owns the controlling stake in a successful publishing house. He has owned the company since his father died, and he now spenRAB his time keeping the board of directors off his back, in between enjoying the playboy lifestyle with fast cars, flash apartments, every toy available, and whatever woman he wants.

He has a friend in Julie Gianni (Cameron Diaz), who he basically uses for sex and little else, and commitment is not in his vocabulary. David throws a party in his lavish apartment and it is here that he meets the mysterious yet beautiful Sofia Serrano (Penelope Cruz), who comes along as the date of David's best mate Brian (Jason Lee).

David and Sofia have an instant attraction to each other, and end up spending the night together (no sex though). When leaving Sofia's apartment the next day, a somewhat changed David runs into the ever-present Julie who, after cajoling him into getting into her car, proceeRAB to chastise him about his lack of commitment and expresses her true love for him. She becomes a little more than agitated and promptly drives her car off a bridge, killing herself and leaving David in a coma with horrendous facial disfigurement."

After that, we see David sink into a depression, yearning for Sofia. When he finally plucks up the courage to contact her and see her, they go out with Brian, and it's clear that she doesn't have the same feelings and he's left alone that night, lying drunk in the street.

The morning, he is awaken by Sofia. Everything has changed, Sofia loves David and they build a life together.

Soon however, things start going 'weird'. David wakes up one night, to see Julie laying in Sofia's place. 'Julie' tries to convince David that she actually is Sofia to no avail. Shocked and confused, David ties up and, we're lead to believe that he beats the crap out of her.

David gets paranoid, believing that a trick is being played on him. Later he goes to see Sofia again, but she 'changes' into Julie again and David enRAB up killing her.

All the time the film's cutting between the story and David in prison in talks with a psychologist.

In the end, there's a couple of interpretations.

1. David, realising that the doctors could not fix is face injuries decides that he will kill himself and be frozen krogenically, in order to be brough back in the future. Throughout the freezing process he chooses to carry on in a 'lucid dream'; so he chooses what will happen; that sofia will fall in love with him, perfect life etc. However, there's a technical glitch which turns his dream into a nightmare (hence seeing Julie in Sofia's place). In the end, this is explained to him by tech support and at the end he chooses to be awoken as it's not 150 years in the future.

2. Another interpretation is that it's all a dream that David has while he's in his coma.

So... there you go.

Vanilla sky and Apocalypse now are both great movies in their own right and favourites personally of mine.

Remember bd1756 google is your friend ;)

a lot less work than staring a thread and checking for replies.

I hate this film. HATE it.

It was just so blatant at the end. They had to explain EVVVEEERRRYYYTTTHHIIIING.

They had to explain it to the masses. Pretty weak. But I never saw the older one and when I first saw this I was prettty taken aback. It just one of those films that messes with your head. I didn't think it was horrible though...
