V strom owners sound off!

I take it you've owned one before.

Well, when I hit 50 k, it might be on the market. I'll have to post pictures, sometime.

So what is all in the collection @ present? .....and don't tell me there isn't a v-strom.

Only bike I have right now is my V-Strom. First street bike I ever rode was in 1979. A 1978 Yamaha XS750 my brother owned. I have the desire to get an older bike to "play" with. I like the 80's bikes. Been looking at GS's, CB's, KZ's, etc. Just seems rediculous to me how much some of these bikes are selling for. Just still looking/shopping around. I had a 1984 Kawasaki 750 Turbo that I bought new. Would love to have another one of those but there selling prices are thru the roof and parts are hard to come by.

From what I've heard, the xs750 was a bit of clinker. The XS850 was a big improvement (so I've read) but by then, people weren't big on 'em. However, for only having been built two years (80 - 81) I never seem to have much a problem getting parts for it.

I'm really curious to know what it's worth, since it's in pretty much original condition (not repainted) and the only thing I have done to it is having the seat recovered. I couldn't imagine it being worth than 1 k to someone who is a collector of these things, but I've been wrong before.

The higher price vintage bikes, from the little I've seen tend to be low mileage, excellent condition machines. Which I don't understand, because for 4 k, you can pick up a bike 10 years old with 12 - 17 k miles on it.

I've heard that of the XS750s also. Not the case with the one my brother had. Just look at eBay. Amazes me what some of those older bikes are selling for. Crazy.

Here's my situation.

Currently driving the xs850, which I have put on 33 k so far and I figure it's good to go another 10 k or so. (bought the bike with only 9 k on it @ 20 years old!)

My other bike is a 1984 Honda magna 700. Drove it a bit too hard, now I need to save pennies and buy an engine from a boneyard (5 bills approximately, and I have put engines in bikes before, come to think of it, it was a xs750!)

So I have bikes to drive the next 4 - 5 years.

My typical trip is around 60 miles. I like to drive the bike to work (20 miles) and different places around Wisconsin, where I live.

Don't have any particular desire to drive half way across the country.

So, the answer to the original question would be "why yes there are other choices, there are 10 year old Honda Magnas that look nice too. There are a lot of choices, but the V-strom has caught my attn for the time being."
