V For Vendetta

Anyway, I really enjoyed V for Vendetta. There was an awful lot of very articulate dialogue that went right over my head, and maybe the film was a bit long (catching the 11:30pm showing didn't help that, though). Otherwise I can't fault it and I would thoroughly recommend it. I think it'll stand up well to repeat viewings.
 
The cinema was quite empty for me too, I thought that it was because it was early, although lots of people were going to see the Pink Panther.. I can't say I've seen much marketing, maybe that's why. But hopefully reviews will be good and people will see it. There is quite a bit of competition around.

I loved Vs mask and thought it was like Scream/Scary Movie too.. I can see them doing well for halloween costumes.
 
Quite empty for me too, although a) I wasn't in the classiest part of Scotland, and everyone was probably watching Date Movie instead, but mainly; b) Because it was Sunday afternoon.

Anyway... a spectacular movie. And a movie with balls for once, thank God. The political message is very clear, the parallels with today are there (bird flu used as a fear tactic? And the idea of a massive attack being conducted by the government to get control of the public, while blaming terrorists?) And the thought-provoker of the whole terrorist/freedom fighter discussion. All this in a mainstream, big-buck Hollywood spectacular? Genius.

Setting it in Britain is also a good idea - because it makes it seem a bit distant to American eyes, but not too distant that they don't get the message. Can you imagine if the film had blown up the White House? It would never have been accepted. Yet it retained its relevance early on by the Fox-inspired 'voice of London' going off on rant about America.

Generally very slickly produced - only criticisms I would have regard the awful, awful Guantanamo Bay twist, almost as if the writers couldn't think of a way out; and the fact that there is a clear link with 1984. But it is only inspired by Orwell, rather than being a rip-off, and has been suitably updated.

Certainly not a date movie though... jeesh. Unless you've got a very politically motivated partner.
