What do you guys think about the theory that V -- the character -- Was ultimately Gay as far as how he was portrayed?
Pickles4Dawson, and I had this discussion on the Natalie Portman board, but I thought I would broche the subject here as it is fascinating on a lot of levels... The main one being if V is Gay then he is one of the few, mainstream Gay Action-Heroes/Comic Book heroes in existence even if his supposed sexual preference isn't a big part of who he is and what he does.
The evidence to suggest V may be Gay is:
1) He was sent to Larkhill prison/gulag as were most "undesirables" -- Including the Lesbian woman whom his cell was next to and he exchanged letters with (the same letters he lets Eve read during her "imprisonment").
2) Eve's friend, Gordon, is a closet-homosexual in the film and he mentions something about how his mother taught him how to flip eggs just as V mentions and demonstrates when he and Eve first meet after he resuces her fron the Fingermen.
If you recall, they even had Eve make this very same comment -- That she knows someone (V) who does the exact same thing with the eggs -- when she is at Gordon's and he fixes her breakfast.... Therefore, this was not just a "throwaway" scene and was put there to bridge the two scenarios for a possible result that Gordon and V may have been lovers before London collapsed and the totalitarian regieme started.
3) V eventually falls in love with Eve toward the end of the film... But one can argue it was more of a plutonic love and he was just happy to have found someone like Eve whom he could pass "the future" on to as not only does he give her the train with explosives, more importantly he also says it is up to her do with it what she pleases. One can interpet this as he was in love with the idea of finding a Tablua Rasa in Eve more than a romantic interest... Especially, if he was Gay.
What do you guys think?
I think it is a facinating theory and while it does have its holes, you can see how the pieces fit together one way if you choose to intepret them meaning V may be Gay and that is why I thought it was an interesting discussion as the same thing is said about the subtext of X-Men being "Society hates me because I am Gay" instead of "Society hates me because I am a Mutant".
