My father is an 88 year old in good general health. He has has a recurring UTI that has gotten worse. He has had severe reactions from strong sulfa drugs fron urologist. what antibiotics are available in lieu of sulfa derivatives? The recent infectious disease MD wanted to put him in hospital and administer IV sulfa under supervision. Specialist said he was unsure how bad the reaction might be and could cause heart attack or stroke. Naturally aging father and spouse are totally against therapy with same medication. Hoping for guidance on next steps.
Don't know , but assume that UA cultures have been done. Do know that CIPRO did not clear totally and then the sulfa drug was introduced. Severe reactions includes railing chills for about and hour then high fever 24 hours long. This has happened twice after one dose of the same RX 2 weeks apart.
