Using unlocked phone for UMA

I've got an unlocked CSL (Hong Kong) branded 8120. It's worked really well for me in general for several months. I can and do frequently surf with Wi-Fi. I've recently realized that I don't appear to have UMA--it doesn't even show up as an option and I've looked where it's supposed to be. I've done some research here and on Howard Forums and I haven't found anything conclusive yet, but it looks like it may be impossible to use UMA on T-Mobile with a phone that isn't T-mobile branded.
Is anyone successfully using UMA on t-mobile with an unlocked phone?
Thanks!

The UMA is TMO specific...since the they are the only company currently using it. I'm not sure if it's possible to activate it on a non-TMO branded device.

You may have to do a little more research and tinkering...if I had a device I would attempt it myself.

Thanks Reddog, so far most signs point to something pretty deep in uneditable branding-ware but I haven't found anything definitive yet. I was hoping to determine if anyone has succeeded before I devote too many more hours to it.

Actually I was under the impression that the UMA feature was driven by service books, and will only work on DEVICES that TMO supports - so the 8120 should work -Have you tried re-sending your service books? Does your Profile on MyTmobile show you have a 8120?

Service book resend was among the first things I tried, but it didn't seem to do anything but congratulate me on my email accounts. And yes, My t-mobile shows me as having an 8120.

I don't believe it but I can't prove it. If you have a wi-fi capable phone, you should be able to connect to a wi-fi hotspot, be it home or public, and browse the internet.

I'd keep trying. I've got a lot experience browsing with an unlocked phone without a data plan but, unfortunately for your question, it happens to be a T-Mobile sold phone. I think it ought to work.

In you browser>browser options, have you got your "browser" set to "Hotspot Browser" and your "emulation" set to "Microsoft IE?"

You need to check the following:

Under Manage Connections make sure you are set to WiFi preferred
Also under Manage Connections is the WIFI network have a red, green, or yellow symbol?

If you show EDGE I dont think you are actually WiFi browsing. If you have green symbol for WiFi try turning off your mobile network and see what happens.

I think everyone is right I think tmo needs to support the phone for UMA to show on the phone. I playing with a unlocked bold and two things i have noticed was one UMA and internet browser is missing. only hotspot and blackberry browser is showing. Its a waiting game for now.

Here are some screenshots of my settings, etc. I'm confident that I'm browsing on Wi-Fi. I get the "Restore Connections" message when I try and dial with the Mobile Network off. If I accept "Restore Connections" it just turns on the Mobile Network and calls using that connection (Mobile Network off in these shots).

Here are some screenshots of the Wi-Fi Diagnostics Page. I've read elsewhere that there should be a UMA section here on T-Mobile branded phones. As you can see, mine doesn't. It ends with "Blackberry Infrastructure" which shows green checkmarks in all the circles when the mobile network is on (it was off in these shots). I don't believe the word UMA appears anywhere on my phone.

If anyone has any advice on what to try next, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks very much!

As far as I know, UMA is driven by two factors: service books, and the presence of the provider's UMA certificates. My T-Mobile 8320 has a pair of certificates (T-Mobile USA, Inc. Engineering and Opterations CA and T-Mobile USA, Inc. Root CA).

Check to see if those certificates are installed on your device (Options>Security>Certificates). I don't know if you can import those certificates, but there is an option to Send via Email or Send Via PIN on my device.

Wow, that's a path I haven't tried yet! In fact I have no T-mobile certificates on my phone. I've got a bunch, though: Comodo, Entrust, Go Daddy, Verisign, Vodafone, etc. The majority have green checkmarks, but there's one or two with red X's and or yellow check marks. If you'd be willing to try sending me one via PIN or email, that'd be awesome!

I've just extracted the certificates via email from my device, and I'm attaching them here (so if anyone else needs them they can get them here). If you unzip them, then send them via email to your BlackBerry, it looks like you can install the certificate that way. I'd install the Root certificate first, since the E/O cert is signed by the Root one.
