using salt to save a dying fish?

Has anyone ever heard of using salt to save a dying fish. when I was a kid, we used to try and save our dying gold fish with salt water. I believe it worked, has anyone else heard of this, and how much salt do you use. thanks
 
A lot of people add some salt (not table salt!) to their tanks to help with Ich. Whats wrong with the fish?
