Using my phone for internet access for my netbook

I did a search and downloaded and tried a couple of apps for my HTC Eris to perform this task. I have not met with success. Can anyone recommend an app that will EASILY let me do this. I am not savvy enough to know about rooting/tethering so please help out a noob??

look it up in the market.
install phone app.
download the "pc installer" to your phone from their website to your phone. or directly from your pc depending on how you want to download it
connect phone to pc, drag pc installer to PC.
install pc installer
follow instructions
connect and surf
