Using Doc Martens as hiking boots?

I was planning a small hiking excursion with some friends, and they seemed skeptical at my choice of Doc Martens as hiking boots (the "Carey" design to be specific). They doubted its grip, ankle support and general toughness. I value them for these exact reasons and find them incredibly comfortable even after a days worth of hiking. Are they truly a poor choice of footwear or is it a matter of preference?
Considering that all my friends spent just as much money on their hiking boots I'm perfectly content with my hundred-dollar martens. Mine are covered under warranty too.
