Using an at&t /Cingular phone in France?

I will be traveling to France at the beginning of the year, and I cannot seem to find a whole lot of info on what to do. I have a Motorola Razr and I looked and it says I can use it in France, and I found how much it costs, but do I have to do anything once im over there to make it work or will it just work? Also, to dial a number back in the US, or for someone back in the US to call me, do I or they have to dial any country numbers or just the same 10 digit number? Also, what about texting? Please dont tell me to call the phone company becuase last time I called they were no help. Thanks
